The Bhairab Kund Khola Small Hydropower Project is a 3 MW run-of-river facility located in Tatopani VDC, Sindhupalchowk District, within the Central Development Region of Nepal. Utilizing the flow of the Bhairabkund Khola, a tributary of the Bhotekoshi River, the project harnesses a gross head of approximately 226.77 meters and a net head of 222.73 meters to generate clean electricity. The project’s infrastructure includes an RCC gravity diversion weir, Tyrolean and side intakes, gravel traps, settling basins, and a 680-meter rectangular tunnel feeding water to a surface powerhouse. It employs two horizontal axis Pelton turbines delivering a combined capacity of 3 MW with an annual net energy production of around 18.67 GWh. Power is evacuated through a 31 km, 33 kV transmission line connecting the powerhouse to Sunkoshi via the proposed Chaku substation. The project supports rural electrification and local economic development, with an estimated financial internal rate of return (IRR) of 14.29% and a benefit-cost ratio of 1.25.
