The Maya Khola Hydropower Project is a 14.9 MW run-of-river hydroelectric facility located in Sankhuwasabha District, Koshi Province, eastern Nepal. Developed by Maya Khola Hydropower Company Ltd, the project harnesses the flow of the Maya Khola river. Originally planned for 5 MW, the capacity was upgraded under NEA’s Q40 norm. The project was commissioned in December 2019 and is connected to Nepal’s national grid via a 3.4 km, 33 kV line to NEA’s Baneshwar substation, and later integrated into the 220 kV Koshi Corridor on 16 February 2023. The company transitioned from a private limited to a public limited company in May 2016 to facilitate public equity investment. Financing was secured through a consortium loan of NPR 1.825 billion from NIB, Century Bank, and Civil Bank. The project’s generation license, issued on 12 June 2014, is valid for 35 years. An IPO launched in early 2023 split equity with a 66:34 promoter-public ratio. Maya Khola exemplifies a community-inclusive and PPP-type development model, contributing clean energy to Nepal’s growing energy needs.
