Chhandi Khola Hydropower Project

Lamjung, Gandaki

The Chhandi Khola Small Hydropower Project is a 2.0 MW run-of-river facility located in Lamjung District, Gandaki Zone of Nepal’s Western Development Region. Developed by Chhyangdi Hydropower Ltd., the project harnesses flows from both Chhandi Khola and Ghatte Khola. With a combined design flow of 1.381 m³/s and a gross head of 184.35 m, the plant includes two horizontal-axis Pelton turbines, each rated at 1 MW, and two 1200 kVA synchronous generators. The infrastructure features two diversion weirs—stone masonry and RCC gravity types—a combination of rectangular and circular headrace canals, surface gravel traps and desanding basins, and a steel surface penstock spanning over 2.1 km. The powerhouse is of surface type (21.12 x 17.76 m) and connects to a 33 kV transmission line stretching 10 km to Udipur substation. Commissioned on 13th Chaitra 2072 (March 26, 2016), the project generates an average of 11.204 GWh annually. Its reliable design, including efficient turbines and transformers, demonstrates effective small-scale hydropower development in Nepal.
