About

The Sunkoshi Hydropower Station (SHPS) is a 10.05 MW run-of-river project with daily pondage, located 81 km east of Kathmandu in Sindhupalchok District, Bagmati Province. Commissioned in January 1972, the plant was developed through bilateral cooperation between the Government of Nepal and the Ministry of Water Conservancy and Electric Power of the People’s Republic of China. It comprises three generating units of 3.35 MW each, with a design annual generation of 70 GWh. Key infrastructure components of the Sunkoshi Hydropower Station include a gated diversion weir across the Sunkoshi River, a 2.5-kilometer headrace tunnel for water conveyance, a surface powerhouse equipped with three Francis turbines, and a 66 kV transmission line extending to Kathmandu for grid integration. The total project cost was approximately NPR 109.4 million. SHPS is owned and operated by the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) under a fully public model. In 2014, the plant sustained damage when the Jure landslide triggered a massive debris surge in the Sunkoshi River, damaging two dam gates and disrupting operations. As of FY 2080/81, the plant generated 58.2 GWh- 5.2% higher than the previous year- representing 92.2% of its annual target and 92.7% of its design generation.
